CSC RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT FACILITY

This is a featured project

Owner: Children's Service Center Of Wyoming Valley
Location: Wilkes-Barre, PA
Completion Year: 2004

A private, non-profit provider of community based behavioral health services made the decision to expand services to include children in need of supervised, twenty-four hour care within an institutional residential facility. The facility includes housing units for fifty-two children up to age 18, an administration building, a treatment center including individual and group treatment components, an education building, and recreation facilities. Materials employed in the construction of the facility needed to be durable enough to withstand abuse from troubled children who may act out at times. While the materials needed to be "industrial strength” the atmosphere of the child-centered facilities was intended to be a place of comfort, possessing a character that is both attractive and welcoming, warm and friendly in order to avoid creating an institutional atmosphere. This was accomplished through the use of warm colors and human scaled, residential appearing materials. Construction of the $5,000,000 project was expedited through the use of panelized frame components while the brick exterior provides a human scaled, durable, and low maintenance finish. The addition of a large porch enhances the home-like environment and increases the useable space in the residence.
