CHILDRESS HOUSE RENOVATION

Childress
Roswell, NM
1983

When Floyd and Shirley Childress decided to move back into the 1930's Childress homestead in Roswell, New Mexico, they enlisted C. Allen Mullins Architect to help with planning changes to the house. The typical existing kitchen adjoined a large pantry and beyond, a maid's room. The maid's room was just behind the living room and beyond further was the bedroom wing. Access to the bedroom wing from the kitchen prior to the remodel was achieved by going through the dining room then transferring diagonally across the living room. This caused a circulation problem for the living room and arranging furniture was difficult. Floyd addressed this problem with the architect and asked for a solution. Since a pantry and a maid's room was no longer a requirement, Architect Mullins devised a plan where the kitchen and pantry were combined. By opening a closet between the maid's room and the hallway to the bedroom wing, a new circulation pattern was developed directly from the kitchen to the bedroom wing. The door from the living to the bedroom hallway was closed and a pair of French doors was installed on each side of the fireplace leading into the former maid's room. This area now became a rear parlor. The kitchen and pantry weree redesigned into an eat-in kitchen; pantry cabinets were saved and striped a finished natural pine which provided a back drop for the modern plastic laminate cabinet and lighting cove design.
