FIRE ISLAND HOUSE

Teich
Fire Island, NY
1982

The overall design borrows its formal, linear composition from the interesting boardwalks and the natural parallel sweep of the bog bordering the site. The entranceways, with dramatic two story vertical spaces, become reference point for the design which breaks down into comfortable, less formal living spaces. The requirement was to design a house and swimming pool on a site with stringent set back requirements. The house (1,700 SF of floor space on a 7,000 SF lot) was positioned inland but using an outer stairway to the roof, a breathtaking view of the bay and the sea was provided. The discreet entrance off Holly Walk, the unique floor plan with many private spaces and the placement of windows and trellises all added to the intimacy. Many design decisions were made with conservation in mind. The solution was to keep the bog intact as an environmental asset and to add trellises and fencing planted with deciduous vines which would provide shade and privacy. The building was oriented for maximum use of the sun for warmth and light and breezes for cooling. The residence was also equipped with solar panels for domestic hot water needs and heating the pool. The building is a light wood frame structure and methods common to the island that blend the houses beautifully with the site. The owner received a 40% Tax rebate for the installation solar panels.
