DELAWARE TOWNHOUSES

Childress
Roswell, NM
1985

The client, Floyd Childress, hired C. Allen Mullins Architect to design a spectulative townhouse project. Zoning on a vacant lot in the city of Roswell allowed multiple units. Mr. Childress' program required four units; one unit with three bedrooms and two units with two bedrooms. The client was interested in matching the style of the adjacent homes. On one side there was a bungalow style house and on the other a southwestern style stucco house with a flat roof. The new townhouse would have to be joined by a drive connecting the street with an alley due to the lot being long and narrow. Architect Mullins devised a plan so the units stepped up the narrow lot so that each unit was afforded a different and private outdoor space. The three bedroom unit (2 stories) was tucked in the rear at the alley. C. Allen Mullins Architect urged the client during the program development of the project to make each of the townhouses three bedrooms instead of only one unit, but the client determined that two bedroom units were more marketable. Years after the units were completed, Architect Allen Mullins visited the site and a young couple emerged from the first unit. During the conversation, the couple expressed how much they enjoyed the townhouse and because they wanted to expand their family, "could a third bedroom be added to the unit?"
