CSC BARNES BUILDING

Children's Service Center of Wyoming Valley
Wilkes-Barre, PA
1999

This project involved adding 1,800 square feet of office space to a 7,300 square feet existing building while providing a new staff entrance. The building is a colonial revival structure with representative details including broken pediments at the main entrance. Since attempting a duplication of the existing masonry and details had the potential to create an obvious and discordant patch where new met old, it was decided to develop a design that was compatible and complimentary to the existing structure. The use of a more neutral and lighter material was employed to create a slightly more subtle extension of the building. The walls were set back slightly from the existing wall line to express the transition from the old to the new. The addition "saddles" the existing structure at the second floor and extends to the first floor providing an egress stair and creating a new entrance that addresses the orientation to vehicle parking and accessibility requirements. The $300,000 addition was detailed as a gesture to the colonial revival elements of the existing building. A brick planter, stone sills, and EIFS “brick" arches above the window openings helped to visually tie the addition to the existing building. With its many windows, the interior is bright and pleasant while the use of natural wood doors and other trim adds to the visual warmth of the space. The open office plan allows flexibility to reconfigure as needed. The windowed stair leads to an open lobby that acts as a connection to both the existing building and the new addition from the rear parking.
